Benderson Family Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center opened in 2011 and operates as a 45-bed nursing home located at 1959 Honore Avenue, Sarasota, Florida 34235.
Since 2018, a review of public records reflects that this Sarasota nursing home has received 27 deficiencies cited by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. The nursing home was also fined by the State of Florida in 2020.
Federal law requires that nursing facilities ” must establish and maintain an infection prevention and control program designed to provide a safe, sanitary and comfortable environment and to help prevent the development and transmission of communicable diseases and infections.” The Agency found that the Benderson nursing home failed to meet this requirement in 2018 and 2022. Complaints at the nursing home have also resulted in citations related to the failure to report abuse, neglect and exploitation and to properly investigate and report alleged violations. Other notable violations include the failure to adhere to the resident right to receive adequate and appropriate healthcare, the failure to ensure residents are free from unnecessary psychotropic medications, and the failure to provide a safe, clean, homelike environment for residents.
It does not appear, from a review of public records on file with the Sarasota Clerk of Court, that any lawsuits have been filed against this nursing home since the time of its opening. Two negligence lawsuits, however, were previously filed against the same license-holder for this nursing home, but those lawsuits asserted negligence against its “sister” assisted living facility. The most recent of those lawsuits was resolved in 2016.
Florida Officials Observe Deficiencies in 2024 at Benderson Family Nursing Home
Additional deficiencies were observed by state officials in January, 2024. One of these violations was due to the facility’s admission of a resident with serious mental illness without conducting the proper pre-admission screening and resident review. Of course, this is an important requirement because residents who are admitted with significant mental health issues could potentially pose a real danger and threat to other residents living within a nursing home.
Other violations were observed during this standard inspection that were related to electrical systems and the improper installation of alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
