Complaints and Standard Inspections Reveal Issues
During the most recent standard licensure inspection at Breeze Care Center, the investigators with the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration observed deficiencies and cited this Sarasota nursing home for failing to comply with state and federal law.
The observed violations were related to the failure to adhere to each resident’s right to be treated with dignity and the failure to comply with requirements for resident grievances and complaints. According to Florida officials, one resident told nursing home staff “she had been wearing the same worn and torn pajamas for the past several months.” Another resident complained to a nurse “about the loss of his deceased wife’s ashes” from his room. The nurse added that “I don’t know what happened and what is going to be done about it.” Investigators noted that “the facility grievance log did not show evidence Resident #45’s grievance was documented.”
Other violations observed by investigators at this nursing home relate to failures to comply with requirements for care plan timing and revision, pharmacy services, procedures and records, cooking facilities and electrical equipment. Breeze Care Center Staffing Levels Rated “Much Below Average”
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services receive data from nursing homes that is used to determine staffing levels and staff turnover. According to CMS: “Higher staffing levels and lower staffing turnover in a nursing home may mean higher quality of care for residents. Hours worked by different types of staff are reported by nursing homes, and are used to calculate a ratio of staffing hours per resident per day and the staffing turnover rate. Hours per resident per day describe the average amount of time staff are available to spend with each resident each day. Staff turnover describes how many staff stop working at the facility within a given year.” CMS has currently assigned a staffing rating of “one star” to this nursing home, or “Much below average” under its Five Star Quality Rating system.
