Heartis Venice complaints resulted in an unannounced inspection conducted by officials with the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration following an investigation by local law enforcement. The ALF is located at 1020 N. Tamiami Trail, Venice, Florida 34295. Heartis Venice is a for-profit 211-bed assisted living facility. It was first licensed and opened in May, 2021. I previously reported on a lawsuit that this ALF was a party to where it was sued and named as a defendant in the case. That original blog post may be reviewed here: https://tinyurl.com/3wb5v3xc
Heartis Venice Complaints Substantiated
Complaints at Heartis Venice were substantiated by inspectors with the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration at the ALF. Based on a partially redacted survey, it appears that a resident may have used a knife to commit suicide at the assisted living facility. This brought up significant questions as to whether the resident was being properly supervised by ALF staff and whether the resident was truly appropriate to remain in an assisted living environment to begin with. The facility investigation reveals that “Resident #10 was observed in his room awake and sitting on the by Wellness Associate, Staff C. At approximately 4:40 p.m. Resident #10 was observed unresponsive with (redacted) coming out of his arm.” It does not take a rocket scientist to conclude that the redacted word must be “blood.”
The report continues: “Resident #10 was found (redacted) in the supine position facing west on the couch in the sitting room. One old timer pocketknife was located by the facility staff on the resident. Registered Nurse Staff F said when she moved the body from a seated position to a supine position the knife (redacted) from the area where the resident was sitting.” In other words, it would logically appear from this investigative report that a resident was able to commit suicide in full public view in the sitting room at Heartis Venice with a pocketknife, bleed out and die, with no one coming to his aid or assistance.
At the conclusion of this investigation, Heartis Venice was cited with three Class III deficiencies related to Resident Care- Supervision, Resident Care – Rights & Facility Procedures, and Resident Care – Elopement Standards.
