Sarabella Senior Living complaints brought Florida officials to this Sarasota assisted living facility, while simultaneously there to perform a change of ownership inspection, where a violation of Florida law was found during their investigation. Sarabella Senior Living is a for-profit 134-bed ALF located at 5650 Gantt Road, Sarasota, Florida 34233.
Investigators with the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration responded to complaints at this ALF in late September. The change in ownership had previously occurred at the facility during May, 2025.
Sarabella Senior Living Complaints Result in Citation of Class III Deficiency for Violation of Florida Law
Many people assume that medications are consistently administered to residents of Florida assisted living facilities by licensed nurses. This is incorrect. Under Florida law, in most cases, residents are only allowed to receive limited assistance when receiving their medications and must be able to self-administer those medications. The person providing that assistance is usually not a nurse, but an unlicensed employee referred to as a “med tech.” These unlicensed employees typically have only a few hours of training before they are set loose on the floor of the ALF.
During the inspection, Florida officials made observations, conducted interviews and read resident records. Instead of looking at every resident in the facility, investigators will normally select a much smaller sample. In this instance, they focused on three particular residents. Upon concluding its investigation, the Agency determined that Sarabella Senior Living failed to comply with the requirement related to assistance with the self administration of medications under Florida law. Specifically, it was found that the requirement was “not met as evidenced by: Based on observation, interview, and record review, the facility failed to orally advise the resident of the name and dosage of the medication during medication assistance” for two out of three sampled residents in the facility.
