Summit at Venice is part of a multi-state chain of assisted living facilities affiliated with “a company doing business as “Premier Senior Living.”
Florida state investigators find multiple serious violations of law during March, 2017 unannounced inspection of Summit at Venice assisted living facility
Summit at Venice complaints, concerns and violations of law observed and documented by Florida investigators included those that may pose a significant threat of harm to residents who depend on assisted living facility staff for assistance. During the 2017 visit, Florida investigators concluded that Summit at Venice was failing to provide adequate supervision of residents during meal times. As noted at the time of the complaint investigation at Summit of Venice: “Resident #1 was observed to choke while eating her noon meal on [date redacted] with no staff available to help. This resident has the potential to also suffer a fatal choking episode.” At least two residents were identified that day who needed help eating.
Lack of staff during meal times poses one of the most serious risks to residents of assisted living facilities and nursing homes in Florida: death by choking
Many elderly assisted living residents are at risk of choking. This is often due to complications from surgery, stroke and other medical factors. Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing. Many elderly residents who suffer from dysphagia require a pureed or mechanically altered diet. If their food is not processed properly, or they are mistakenly given solid food, choking and death may quickly follow.
When an assisted living facility does not employ enough staff to supervise and assist residents, especially at meal times, emergencies can go undetected. Staff should be performing critical tasks during this time. They should make each resident’s diet order is being followed. Liquids may need to be thickened too. Staff should be properly trained monitor for residents who need assistance cutting their food to a safe bite size. They should observe residents for any signs of choking or distress.
