Harborchase complaints brought investigators with the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration into its Sarasota assisted living facility where deficiencies were documented and cited during the most recent publicly reported inspection. Harborchase of Sarasota is a private for-profit 125-bed ALF located at 5311 Proctor Road, Sarasota, Florida 34233.
The complaints and resulting deficiencies were set forth and outlined in a 26-page report prepared by Florida officials. One question raised by the investigation is this: If the caregivers cannot verbally speak English, how can they communicate effectively with and meet the needs of the residents? In the report, investigators with the Agency quote the Memory Care Director as saying “‘Google translate is what the staff uses for communicating with each other, a lot of them don’t speak a word of English. I have asked for them to be replaced with staff who speak English. It is terribly confusing for the residents. It’s a mess of issues.” The Executive Director of Harborchase of Sarasota was included in this discussion. As revealed in the report, “the Executive Director said, I have had concerns brought to me about staff speaking and understanding very little English.” The State of Florida cited Harborchase of Sarasota with a Class III deficiency.
Harborchase of Sarasota also Cited for Failing to Comply with Medication and Food Service Requirements
One important aspect of assisted living care is ensuring that the proper assistance with medications is provided to residents who require that type of help.
While in the facility, investigators made observations, reviewed records and interviewed staff members. They concluded that Harborchase of Sarasota “failed to ensure staff who assist residents with self-administration of medications, do so in accordance with proper procedure for” almost half of the residents sampled at the time of the inspection. Additionally, Harborchase was cited for failing to meet requirements related to food service and dietary standards during this most recent inspection.
The company that operates Harborchase of Sarasota has been sued in lawsuits multiple times. HR Sarasota Operator LLC, the company that holds the license to operate Harborchase of Sarasota, settled the most recent negligence lawsuit brought against the ALF.
