Grand Living at Lakewood Ranch Cited in Violation of Florida Law with Two Class III Deficiencies

Residents suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are often at risk of elopement, or wandering away from a facility undetectedly. ALFs must follow safety protocol for those residents who are deemed to be at risk for elopement from the facility, and especially for the benefit those who have a history of elopement. Upon arriving at Grand Living at Lakewood Ranch, Florida officials conducted interviews, made observations and reviewed records. Investigators concluded that the facility “failed to indentify and provide support and supervision for residents with a history of elopement” for three out of three residents who were reviewed. The State of Florida issued a Class III deficiency for this violation.
One very important aspect of assisted living care is the assistance with the self-administration of medications for those residents who require help to ensure that they receive the proper dose as prescribed by their physicians. Investigators with the Agency observed a nurse assisting residents with their medications and determined that she was failing to do so as required by Florida law for four out of four residents who were under observation at that time. A second Class III deficiency was cited against the ALF for this violation.
