Investigators with the State of Florida conducted an unannounced inspection following a Sarasota Health and Rehab complaint related to resident care and neglect that was received in January, 2024.
Sarasota Health and Rehabilitation Center is located at 1524 East Avenue South, Sarasota, Florida 34239. The allegations in the complaint related to the failure to assist residents with personal care and hygiene. Many residents of nursing homes are dependent on staff for help with their basic or normal “activities of daily living.” These include such things as the need for assistance to safely get to and use the bathroom, bathing, dressing and changing clothes and other assistance with grooming and maintaining personal cleanliness.
When officials with the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration arrived on the scene, they reviewed records maintained by the nursing home on behalf of residents, interviewed staff members, and examined the nursing home’s written policies and procedures that are supposed to be followed. Sarasota Health and Rehab was found to be in violation of both state and federal law. Sarasota Health and Rehabilitation Center was cited in violation of the law for failing to provide activities of daily living care to dependent residents and for failing to ensure that the facility adhered to each nursing home resident’s right to receive adequate and appropriate healthcare. Sarasota Health and Rehab Rated “Much Below Average” by Medicare
At present, Sarasota Health and Rehabilitation Center is rated on Medicare’s website as “Much Below Average” and received only one star for its overall rating. What factors enter into a nursing home’s rating? As explained by Medicare, a facility’s “overall rating is is based on a nursing home’s performance on 3 sources: health inspections, staffing, and quality measures.” This most recent substantiated complaint at the nursing home will certainly not help to improve its rating with Medicare.
