Bay Breeze Health and Rehabilitation Center in Venice cited for violating laws
Bay Breeze Health Rehabilitation Center Venice violated law according to Agency for Healthcare Administration investigators. On June 15, 2016, AHCA completed an unannounced complaint investigation at Bay Breeze Health and Rehabilitation Center located at 1026 Albee Farm Road, Venice, Florida 34292. This nursing home is a 120 bed for-profit facility which is operated by Consulate Health Care. As reported in the June, 2016 issue of Provider magazine, a trade journal for the nursing home industry, Consulate Health Care is the sixth largest nursing home chain in the United States with 22,059 beds and total annual operating revenue of $1.7 billion dollars.
Bay Breeze nursing home staff said to have failed to provide care
At the conclusion of its investigation, state investigators cited Bay Breeze Health and Rehabilitation Center for the following violations of the federal Nursing Home Reform Act and state law:
F 309 Failing to provide care or services to attain and maintain the highest practicable well-being of each resident. In citing Bay Breeze Health and Rehabilitation Center’s nursing home for this violation, AHCA concluded that the nursing home failed to report a resident’s skin breakdown, which was observed by a state investigator while staff provided incontinence care to the resident.
N 201 Failing to ensure that each resident receives adequate and appropriate healthcare and protective and support services. This citation of deficient practices was also based on the failure to report changes in a resident’s condition — the breakdown of skin.
Pressure injuries, also commonly known as bed sores, are one of the leading causes of death in nursing homes. Medical publications confirm that they most often directly result from poor care and inadequate staffing. When a resident is left to lie in one position for extended periods of time, their skin may break down. If they are left to lie in their own feces and urine, the problem is frequently compounded and skin breakdown becomes accelerated. Infection may also set in. If the nursing home’s “house doctor” or medical director is not responsive to your requests, then you should consider calling 911 to obtain a transfer to a hospital. In my experience, nursing homes operate under the mantra of “fill every bed, and keep every bed filled.” Therefore, you should not accept or allow the nursing home’s desire to maximize profit to stand in the way of your loved one receiving the proper medical care that they need and deserve.
